Yoho Statement on the 50th Anniversary of ASEAN
Washington D.C. — Congressman Ted S. Yoho (R-FL), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific, issued the following statement on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) 50th anniversary:
“I would like to congratulate the ten member countries of ASEAN on the association’s 50th anniversary. ASEAN’s astounding growth is a credit to the member nation’s potential and effective neighborly foreign policy. This year also marks the 40th anniversary of U.S.-ASEAN relations; a fitting reminder of our thriving partnership.
“I’m happy to see Secretary Tillerson join this year’s ASEAN Regional Forum. I also look forward to President Trump’s upcoming trips to the region for summits later this year. The strength of our partnership has never been more important, as we address an ever-belligerent North Korea. It is critical that we work with our ASEAN partners to irreversibly denuclearize the Korean Peninsula.
“As we observe these noteworthy anniversaries, I send my heartfelt regards to the members of ASEAN and commend the bloc on its healthy influence on the Asia-Pacific region. In my role as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific, I look forward to helping strengthen our partnership in the years to come.”
