Yoho Statement on American Dream and Promise Act
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Ted S. Yoho (R-FL) released the following statement after voting no on H.R. 6 – American Dream and Promise Act:
“I have repeatedly stated that I want to find a solution for Dreamers – those kids who, through no fault of their own were brought to the United States as children illegally. I support providing a method for those who have registered under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA), to obtain legal status.
“However, this must be done in coordination with measures to strengthen our nation’s border security that would reduce illegal immigration. Without robust border security, addressing the loopholes in our immigration system, and enforcement of immigration law already on the books, this bill simply encourages future illegal immigration.
“Today, House Democrats voted again to put individuals here illegally before the U.S. citizens they represent by passing the American Dream and Promise Act. This bill is a magnet that will draw more people to America illegally because they have been shown by the Democratic Party there are no consequences for breaking the law.
“There is a crisis at our southwest border, and this year we have seen apprehensions skyrocket. The brave men and women of our U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), in April alone reported 98,977 apprehensions at the southwest border – and these are only the crossings that we know about. And just last week, CBP apprehended the single largest group of illegal immigrants at one time – 1,036.
“Among other concerns I have with this bill, it misses an important opportunity to improve our immigration system and prevent future illegal immigration from happening. As members of this body know, our immigration system is broken. And today, we have a bill that would do nothing to fix it. House Democrats have placed people here illegally over U.S. citizens.”
