Democrat Background Check Bill Only Hurts Law Abiding Gun Owners
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Ted S. Yoho (R-FL) supported law abiding gun owners across America by voting against H.R. 8 Universal Background Checks. Rep. Yoho released the following statement:
“The bill presented to us today does little to prevent criminals from obtaining guns or curb human violence with the use of a gun. H.R. 8 says if a victim of violence has a protection order, stays at a friend’s house, and uses their friend’s firearm to defend themselves from attack – now the friend and the victim are felons. Does that make sense to anyone? House Republicans asked Democrats to make a commonsense update to the bill - allowing individuals with orders of protection to be exempt from a universal background check in certain private firearm transfer circumstances.
“There are plenty of laws and preventative checks in place right now to stop individuals from obtaining a firearm. Current law already requires background checks for anyone buying a firearm from a licensed dealer at a gun show or before taking delivery from an online sale.
“I believe we must enforce existing laws. Also, we must remain vigilant and recognize the warning signs of violent behavior and mental illness; reporting these warning signs to law enforcement. As a gun owner, I can tell you; only law-abiding gun owners will be affected by H.R. 8.”
