Are you prepared for hurricane season?

Jun 3, 2014
Press Release

Dear Friends,

June 1st was the beginning of the 2014 Atlantic Hurricane Season. As you know, hurricane season runs from June 1st until November 30th. It is important to make sure you and your family is prepared with an emergency kit and plan.

As you might already know there is a hurricane tax holiday going on right now. From Saturday May 31st to Sunday June 8, 2014, qualifying items related to preparing for hurricanes will be exempt from Florida sales tax.

If and when a hurricane happens, planning ahead is a wise thing to do.  Along with your emergency plan, here are some things FEMA recommends you have for your emergency kit.  Here are the basics but you can add more to this list depending on your needs:

  • Water and non-perishable food, enough to support each member of the family for up to 72 hours/3 days.
  • Battery operated radio and batteries so you can get important information from local officials, especially if there is a call for voluntary or mandatory evacuations. You will also want to know where they may be shelters.
  • First aid kit
  • Flashlight
  • Maps
  • Cash or traveler’s check and change
  • Important documents such as proof residence, pictures of your family including pets, insurance policies, bank account records, identification records and tax records in a waterproof, portable container.
  • Comfortable clothing for each family member with at least one change of clothes
  • Blankets and/or sleeping bags for each family member
  • Unique family needs such as prescription medications, extra glasses, pet supplies, infant supplies or any other unique need your family may have.
