We can't solve our nation's issues by being a Republican or Democrat

When asked, nearly 70% of Americans have stated they are "angry" with our current political climate. As a Member of the House of Representatives, I can attest to the divisiveness and selfishness of the two party system.

This could not have been more on display during the House Democrat's staged sit-in, which effectively shut down the voting process for that day. This sit-in not only violated historic rules and laws of decorum of the United States Congress, but was a pitiful power grab on the heels of a national tragedy. This sit-in was portrayed as an attempt to implement gun control measures. As someone who was present and a witness first hand, let me tell you the facts behind the scenes:

- Every member of Congress who participated in the sit in was a Democrat

- These members stated multiple times they would not leave the floor and were standing in solidarity with people protesting all over the Country. In reality, these members were having their meals catered to them on the House floor by staff. Additionally, pillows and blankets were brought to them.

- C-SPAN and the Sergeant-at-Arms forbids the use of cell phones and cameras on the House floor for security purposes. Over 10 different members broadcasted their sit-in live.

- These live feeds were used over 25 times to ask through email blasts and social media posts to raise money. It is highly unethical and illegal to solicit campaign funds for a Member's campaign using taxpayer resources.

- The votes that were delayed included critical veterans projects as well as emergency funding for the Zika virus.

- The following day, the same Members who participated in the sit-in, were seen playing in the 2016 Congressional baseball game at National's stadium celebrating with Republicans.

As a taxpayer it is infuriating to see the misuse of taxpayer funds by elected officials. As the father of an active duty service member and family member to several veterans, it is infuriating to have critical funding held up due to the democrats fundraising for their own campaigns. And finally, as a Floridian whose state has seen over 130 cases reported, it is infuriating to see a gross political stunt get in the way of much needed funds for a public health crisis as well as politicize the tragedy in Orlando.

I have said repeatedly, we cannot as members of the People's House, solve our nation's issues by being a Republican or Democrat. We can only solve these issues as Americans. I, like so many of my constituents, friends, and neighbors are beyond the hypocrisy and danger of party politics. It is time, to begin addressing the root cause of this division and work to find common ground - not fundraise for personal gain. I call on every Member of the House and Senate to not just begin the conversation of unity but act on it. Our country deserves unification.

While I am proud that our team has been listed as the second most effective in the state in garnering bi-partisan support, and 32nd in the entire United States House of Representatives, it is simply not enough. Until we as Republicans and Democrats, can come together and have an adult conversation about the longtime issues like mandatory spending and debt, we will continue down this divided path.
