YOHO STATEMENT REGARDING HOUSE HEARING ON SYRIA
WASHINGTON, DC, SEPT 4– Congressman Ted S. Yoho made the following statement regarding the House Foreign Affairs Committee Hearing on Syria.
“Today’s Foreign Affairs hearing did nothing to change my opinion that intervening in Syria is a terrible idea. Military strikes will lead to an open-ended conflict in the Middle East that the American people neither want nor can afford. Not only is our strategy and objective unclear, the reason the United States should act unilaterally is just as vague. The use of chemical weapons is deplorable and should be decried as such by the rest of the world, yet for some reason some people think it is the United States alone who must enforce the world’s outrage. The philosophy that the United States should be the world’s police is one that will lead to our own demise.”
Congressman Yoho continued,
“An analyst recently said that they ‘…don’t think we have the stomach to deploy enough punitive action that would serve as a deterrent.’ If the rationale for action is to stop the use of chemical weapons and we might not even be able to do that, what is our objective here? Secretary Kerry did nothing to calm my fears that this might draw us into yet another ongoing war in the Middle East.”
